Other Programs
Mentee Program
Many participants experience profound life changes through Beauty Night Society and would like to be able to help other participants take steps towards healthy life choices. Participants are invited to go through our 3-hour volunteer training session and become mentees. Mentees shadow an existing volunteer or staff member as they are trained to become a front line volunteer. In 2009, 20% of our Monday Night volunteers were women enrolled in the mentee program. For those entered in the mentee program we have scholarships offered at Future Hair School and aim to establish more education opportunities with community partners.
Nutrition Program
There is a great deal of truth in the phrase “you are what you eat.” For many of our participants who live with illness such as Diabetes 2, HIV/AIDS, or Hep C, the Beauty Night and dietician students team provide participants with meal planning, budgeting, and instruction in how to create healthy meals from food donated by the food bank. Participants also enjoy a meal prepared by Beauty Night volunteers. During the meal, conversation is facilitated by a dietetic volunteer. At the end of the meal, the participants are given a bag full of the ingredients, and the recipe, to recreate the meal for up to 6 people. Each six-week session is designed with participants’ health and lifestyle concerns in mind. Previous sessions have included mom & tot nutrition, hot plate nutrition, and many more.
Job Interview Program
Applying for a job can be nerve racking. Based on the concept “practice makes perfect,” Beauty Night offers women an opportunity to get as much practice as possible. Participants are lead through a series of interviews with different “employers.” Actors and Human Resources specialists are given the resumes and a sheet of potential questions. Through a series of different scenarios, Beauty Night is able to lead participants through a series of potential scenarios that have often stump people during the interview process. When possible, we have videotaped the last interview, and played it back to the participants. As people get 97% of their information from what they see and 3% from what they hear, we believe in making our participants look and feel confident. They are therefore also invited to participate in the life-makeover program, to make them feel ready for the next step. This program is offered in partnership with organizations that provide back to work training. After our program, participants are referred to Dress for Success to apply for job.
Please note: the Nutrition Program and Job Interview Programs are not currently running due to a lack of funding and resources. If you would like to help reinstate these programs, please visit our How You Can Help page.
