Team Beauty Night in Action

What is Beauty Nite? Love to all women. Pampering, non-judgemental. Head to toe feeling of loving yourself! Thank you ladies! - Beauty Night Participant

Happy 2013! Team Beauty Night jumped right into the new year with two beauty nights in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). With January 1 falling on the Tuesday, we started our year visiting some of our community partnerships facilities.Wednesday night brought Team Beauty Night to Sorella House and Thursday to First United Church (320 East Hastings Street).

Our visit to First United Church is always special to us. Back in 2000, Wish Drop in Centre’s home in the church. 12 years ago, we held our first Beauty Night there. Last night volunteers, staff, and participants shared their thoughts as what they love about Beauty Night.

“Its a great program for all the women. I Have been coming for 8 years. It’s great to be pampered by all the volunteers and staff. I engage all woman to treat themself with love and be treated the way they should. Thanks Carol (Caroline MacGillivray) and all the girls that are here. Pampering can encourage them.” Tracy, Beauty Night participant.

If you are interested in joining our cause, there are opportunities to volunteer, donate or become a sponsor. Thank you for your on going support. Beauty Night… dignity is beautiful.

Simply Spirit Author Donates 50% of December Sales

We are thrilled that Joseph Eliezer, Psychotherapist and Author of Simply Spirit: A Personal Guide to Spiritual Clarity, One Insight at a Time is donating 50% of the December sales of his book to Beauty Night Society. Simply Spirit has reached the #1 position in the self-help/spiritual category on Amazon.ca and has been embraced by the BC Cancer Society. Born from intuitive insights and written in quotation form, Joseph’s bestselling book has touched people worldwide.

“In many ways, [Simply Spirit] reminded me of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet… Its message too is both timely and timeless and befits an age where spiritual clarity is beckoned for.” – Robert Pereira, MD.

“I chose Beauty Night Society because their values resonate with me. They’re transparent; they do an enormous amount of work on a minuscule budget; their executive director, Caroline MacGillivray, works 24/7 to keep the project relevant; they recognize the efforts made by their army of volunteers; and, most importantly, they are dedicated to helping people. They focus on women and children who live in the DTES. Nowhere else in the country do we have so many impoverished people living in such a densely populated area.

The first position I ever held as a counsellor was working in the addictions field at Main and Hastings. It wasn’t pretty. I seldom came across support workers who lasted long in their positions. Connections with counsellors or other service providers didn’t happen often. Beauty Night has been serving the population for 12 years. It’s an award-winning charity, and the more I get to know them, the more I want to become involved.” - Joseph Eliezer on why he is donating 50% of the sales of his book Simply Spirit during December to our cause.

Walk Tall and With Confidence to Celebrate Dignity

Last Wednesday night, My Sisters Closet, a gem of a store filled with wonderful finds (This social enterprise that supports Battered Women’s Support Services) was packed. Pedestrians glanced through the windows to see what was causing the laughter and fun. Our volunteer stylists teamed up with their volunteers to help find 6 of our ladies something special to wear walking down the Runway during Celebration of Dignity Gala Fundraiser at Hive Vancouver (128 West Hastings Suite 210).

“I can’t remember the last time I got to pick something out in a store,” said one participant. On Saturday, December 15th, 10 of our participants will walk down the runway for an eco fashion show. Laughter, hugs, and posing for photographer, Ken Villeneuve peppered the conversation and the act of trying on clothes.

Last night several of our participants gathered in the wellness room at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. While Beauty Night activities commenced upstairs, our volunteer stylists Angela, Christine and Emily worked on walking. Participants ranged from 19 to 87 years of age, body types, and ethnicities proving that all of us are beautiful.

“We are so grateful with the support of My Sister’s Closet,” explains Beauty Night Founder, Caroline MacGillivray. “For an eco fashion show, it felt like a natural alignment. The monies raised from their social enterprise support the wonderful work that Battered Women’s Support Services offers. We are thrilled that each lady got to pick out 2 outfits in. It’s been a beautiful opportunity to work with My Sister’s Closet, Hive Vancouver and all of our amazing supporters who are making this event possible. I can’t wait to see each woman walk tall and with confidence on Saturday!”
