Happy Birthday Beauty Night!

9 years ago, Caroline MacGillivray held the first Beauty Night at WISH Drop in Centre in Vancouver, BC. 14 volunteers took care of 73 women who attended the event. Many of the attendees live in poverty and experience violence. The opportunity to be in a safe space is something that is valued. The opportunity to be treated with dignity and respect made them feel good.

What started off as a special Christmas make over party, became a way to reintroduce touch to victims of violence. When attendees saw the physical change, they started to believe other types of change were possible. They attended literacy classes to show off their freshly painted nails, visited the health clinics to talk about how good they felt and walked out with an extra bounce in their step.

Working directly with the attendees, helped change the perception of many of our volunteers. One of our volunteers told us, “I go past these women every day on the bus but I don’t see them. Tonight I laughed and hugged so many of them. I can’t go back to not being able to see them.”

Last night we celebrated Beauty Night Society’s 9th birthday in Vancouver & Prince George. In Vancouver, the festivities started off with Christmas caroling. Volunteers, participants & their children sang Christmas tunes while creating Christmas cards. Thanks to accessing karaoke via youtube.com, we were able to get everyone singing and dancing.

Women and children gathered around the table with their children cutting and pasting ribbon to card stock. Womyn’s Gym coordinator, Tyla Flexman helped the women find stickers & pens as they sifted through the mountain of art supplies. Through words and art they found different ways to say thank you on paper. These cards were given to many of our volunteers.

Thanks to sponsorship through Liberty Wines & the the creative genius of Stacey Dallyn, the Beauty Night room was transformed into a winter wonderland. Wood land creatures sat under a White Christmas tree. Decorated in silver and gold, the words Beauty Night leapt out the fluffy snow that coated the walls.

Founding vice president of Beauty Night Society, Carly Teng was on hand as a roaming photographer. Carly captured pictures of the festivities of the evening. When our photography team was stuck in traffic, Carly stepped in and began to snap pictures of the women & Santa Claus.

Beauty Night board member, Dave Dickson’s eyes twinkled like St. Nick as women & children posed with him. Ten year old, Santa Helper, Katie Dalinghaus smiled pretty for the camera as she handed out the Nancy Black designed Xmas stockings to the women and children.

Stuffed to the brim with warm gloves, tooth brushes, dental care products, skin care, hair care, and body care products, the brightly coloured stockings Katie handed to the women. Like the first Beauty Night makeover event, the stockings contents came from stocking drive from individuals, churches, and businesses that wanted to contribute to Beauty Night’s 7th annual Xmas stocking drive. Led by Stocking Coordinator, Blair Lockhart, BC Hydro, TD Canada Trust, Ch2M Hill and Carrie Wheeler Talent Management and many more collected monies and products for us to fill those stockings.

Hundreds of high school students from York House, Little Flower Academy, Prince of Wales Mini School, Van Tech Secondary, Churchill Secondary School, Kwantlan College and many members of our community stitched the stockings. 5 - 7 year olds in sparks & brownie troupes decorated the stockings with their own personal flair.

Photographers Bruce & Sarah Culver set up the shots. Beauty Night volunteers & participants mugged for the camera. In the Beauty Night room, Tiffany Telford led the make over program. Carol Hogan, Ella Bak, Olivia Cammie, Meagan Stowe, Denise Van Gorkom, Margo Dalinghaus, and Amanda offered make up lessons, hair styling, manicures, mini massages and reiki.

Under the guidance of Kids Club coordinators, Alexa Fox and Sophia Hughes, women and children continued to create cards and occasionally break into a game of “jingle” tag.

While all the laughter- filled activity filled the room, Wendy Shuen and her volunteers bustled from room to room offering delectable goodies to the Beauty Night participants & volunteers. Almond cookies, fruit cake and mouth watering capicino chocolate biscuits satisfied our taste buds and our stomachs.

Throughout it all, DJ Joe, Tyla Flexman, Stacey Dallyn, Margo Dalinghaus, and Tiffany Telford bustled around making the event run smoothly.

Before the women headed out the door, Katie Dalinghaus gave them scarves created by Knit Fit Volunteers. Over 300 scarves were created by students from Elementary schools and High School students around the lower mainland. Spearheaded by Knit Fit founder & program coordinator, Laura Mah, hundreds of youth, seniors and children developed leadership skills and created scarves to keep people warm as they headed out into the snow.

In Prince George, our Beauty Night makeover event took place at Elizabeth Fry Society. Belly dance and self defense classes were held while women were offered make up application, hair styling, mini facials, manicures and much more.

Tonight - in Vancouver, we continue our celebrations at BC Women’s Hospital. Tiffany Telford, Ella Bak, Tyla Flexman, Caitlin Naylor and Lindsay McMillian will be handing out Xmas stockings and offering our makeover programming to the women in Fir Square.

As we head towards the end of the year, we have a few more events this week. In Toronto, the Xmas stockings & makeover program runs of December 17th - while Vancouver volunteers and contributors celebrate Beauty Night Society’s 9th Birthday on a Boat.

Beauty on the Boat enbarks at 7pm on December 17th. An evening on the sea with the music of Greg Cockerill and evening jaunt along the Vancouver coast. Tickets are $50 - proceeds to Beauty Night Society. For more information, please call 778-885-4526 or [email protected].

* For those who still have contributions to give, we are still handing out Xmas stockings and scarves on Xmas eve. Please contact us at [email protected].

6 Day Count Down Until Prince George!

t’s a six day count down before 2nd Xmas Beauty Night make over program in Prince George! Although the buzz is growing, we are still looking for volunteers and contributions for December 14th!

If you are unable to go, please continue to forward the message.

We need hairdressers, makeup artists, aestheticians, RMTs, volunteers to pick up contributions and much more. We are hoping that if we get enough volunteers and supplies, we might be able to increase the events to run 4 times per year!

Eventually if we develop the resources, it would be wonderful to be able to offer programming four nights per week. Based on what the women want, that would include womyn’s gym (one on one personal training), yoga classes, mom & tot nutrition classes, journaling, Kids club, personal development & inner beauty boot camp. Next year, it would be wonderful to be able to have the xmas stocking initiative & Knit Fit community building programs included with our Prince George activities.

In light of the 20 year anniversary of the Montreal Massacre on Sunday (December 6th, 2009) has prompted discussion around the country about what we can do to help women living with violence. Our makeover program is a great way to:

Reintroduce touch to victims of violence
Integrate women who are isolated into communities
Create opportunities for the participants to get involved
with the program.
Build community.

In BC alone, the Highway of Tears and the DTES Missing Women are a call for action. By working together, we can make a difference in the lives of many. When we make someone feel good, we give them hope. When you have hope you can do anything.

Healthy is Beautiful

The flu season is upon us, and everyone everywhere is being more aware of their health and staying healthy.
Beauty Night realizes that healthy eating is not about strict nutrition philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible. Which is one reason we are starting a course for moms and tots teaching healthy recipes that they can prepare with the tools that they have (often only hot plates) and the food that they have avaliable to them. We would love to hear your suggestion of recipes!

Eating poorly conributes to stress and many other side effects, such as:

  • Blood Sugar Imbalances: When we don’t eat enough food, or don’t eat healthy enough food (too little protein and healthy carbohydrates, too much sugar, etc.) we can experience blood sugar fluctuations. These fluctuations can lead to mood swings, fatigue, poor concentration and other negative consequences in the short term, and greater health problems like hyperglycemia in the long run.
  • Caffeine Side Effects: Too much caffeine can lead to poor concentration and decreasef effectiveness, sleep disturbances, and increased levels of cortisol in the blood.
  • Poor Health Outcomes: Poor nutrition can also lead to lowered immunity so you’re more susceptible to illnesses, both minor and major. As you can imagine, this can lead to other problems, including increased stress levels.

We feel that helping our clients make great food choices, they will start to feel amazing and make great life choices as well.

If you can help, please email [email protected], leave a comment or donate!

25 Years from Now

A few weeks ago the African Children’s Choir celebrated their 25 year anniversary. People around the world gathered together at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver to join in the festivities. Thanks to my friend, David Hurford, I was able to attend the gala. Sir Bob Geldoff was honoured for his avocacy work. The fundraiser profiled how the organization grew from a missions trip to Africa. There Ray Barnett, Founder & President of Music for Life heard a child sing. In a land where thousands of children were starving and in need of food and support, they found joy. Instead of the pictures of poverty and desolation that appeared on most news stations around the globe, the African Children’s Choir founders wanted to show the world how wonderful the children were. Through the tours, the choir has been able to give dignity and respect to the children and raise valuable dollars to build schools and so many wonderful programs.

Many of the choir members alumni were present. Engineers, doctors, fashion designers, and those working with the communities they reside in were there. It was inspiring and uplifting to me to see how much the African Children’s Choir has achieved in 25 years. I watched as the live auction took place. Vicki Gabereau and Barry Scott, an auctioneer from Maynards kept driving the prices of the live auction pieces up. I watched in fascination wishing that I had funds to bid on some of the pieces. Running a charity, one understands how necessary having money to achieve your mission can be. To quote Peter Brinckerhoff: “No money, no mission.”

Beauty Night National Executive Director & Founder, Caroline MacGillivray with Serena and Jeffrey Lowe and two of the members of the choir at the African Children's Choir 25th Anniversary Gala Celebration on Sept. 29 (Fairmont Hotel Vancouver)

I started to reflect about how much Beauty Night Society has done on such a nominal budget. Through community support we have run our programs for almost 9 years. Thanks to our volunteers, contributors and our participants, we have achieved many things. I could not help but wonder what would happen if we did have sustainable funding. Our program success are a huge tribute to human spirit, belief that we can make a difference in this world by following our mission and persistence. I started to wonder how we get from where we are today to where I would like to be on our 25th anniversary.

Our mission is to provide marginalized people tools to make positive lifestyle changes to heal themselves and our communities. Our goal is to be able to serve as many people as we can in as many communities around the globe as possible. As I watched pieces from the Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince and Audrey Hepburn’s glove & Tiffany watch be auctioned off, I couldnt’ help but wonder how do we get from where we are now to where we would like to be in two years.

“Caroline MacGillivray from Beauty Night Society,” a voice called out. I looked up to see Vicki Gabereau holding my business card. With a jolt, I pulled myself out of my chair and headed towards the stage. At the top of the evening, we were able to enter our names in a draw to win Bryan Adams tickets. From the distance, I could see my pink business card in Vicki Gabereau’s hand.

When I climbed up the stairs to the stage, Vicki asked me if we should tell everyone about Beauty Night Society. For a moment, I hesitated as it would be great to tell people about what we do. I shook my head. It wasn’t the right time and place. It was time to raise money so the African Children’s Choir could continue to heal more children. I told Vicki I wanted to auction the tickets off. She turned to the mike and announced we were auctioning off the tickets. People became engaged and began to bid. The tickets sold for $4000.

With a bounce in my step, I walked down the stairs back to my seat. The people at my table, some who I now count as friends hugged me and told me it was “such a great thing to do.” I was surprised as to me - it was the only thing to do. When something feels right and I listen to it, I feel satisfied. As I continue to walk towards the future, I thought of all the organizations that are making a difference in this world. I want Beauty Night Society to continue to walk beside them. As we continue down this path, I can only hope that we will be able to work with like minded organizations to help restore dignity and respect to everyone in this world.

* And I did get rewarded for my efforts. I was already flushed from raising an additional $4000. Paul Rodger’s wife told me it was a wonderful thing that I did. She teased me and said, “You don’t really like Bryan Adams do you?” I looked at her in surprise and told her I love Bryan Adams. I grew up listening to him. She pressed the tickets in my hands and told me to enjoy the concert. When I protested, she told me they could always get tickets from Bryan. I was told to have a good time. And that I did. The concert was fantastic!

We’ve come a long way!

It’s hard to believe that Beauty Night Society is almost 9! A lot has changed as we have grown, and a lot more will change as we continue to grow.
The Vancouver Sun wrote this story about our 8 year anniversary.
Since then, our programming has continued to expand, with thanks to our generous volunteers and supporters. We really couldn’t do this without you!
We’re at the start of our busiest season. If you’re interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] to see about opportunities. If you would like to donate yarn or knitting needles for Knit Fit, that would also be wonderful.
We are trying to raise funds to buy products to put into our Christmas Stockings as well. Having funds allows us to buy in bulk, which is beneficial to the women. We love product as well, but it does have to be unused and unopened to ensure our clients feel dignified. Just think, would you like to receive a half used bottle of shampoo in your stocking?
We are also gearing up a Mom and Tot nutrition program, where we will be teaching Moms how to cook simple, healthy recipes under the constraint of it having to be prepared on a hotplate since that is the tools they have available. If you would like to donate crockpots or other kitchen supplies (such as tupperware), we would love that too!

I’m excited about what the future holds for Beauty Night, and I can’t thank you enough for making all of this possible.

Children’s programming update!

October has been a wonderful kick-off month for our children’s programming!

Programming runs Monday and Wednesday nights, from 6:30-8:30pm, with diverse activities for the children of Beauty Night and Womyn’s Gym participants. We’re really excited about all the fun stuff (face-painting, costume-making…) that we’re going to get to do for Halloween. We also have some great new volunteers, and will be running volunteer training soon!

We are going to be adding a Tuesday program at the end of the month, with the goal of working towards programming Monday-Thursday by the end of the year. Tuesday night is Stroller Disco with Caroline, and we are going to be adding on a Mom and Tot nutrition and cooking class that will follow right after! More details on this class next week!

We are currently looking for craft supplies for the KidzCare program, as well as food donations for our nutrition and cooking class. We are also still looking for KidzCare volunteers - if you like working with children and have a few hours each week, this might be the way for you to get involved in Beauty Night! Please send an email to [email protected] if you have any donations, or are interested in volunteering.
