Truth & Beauty: Photographs by Ken Villeneuve runs until Dec 7th at Vancouver’s InterUrban Gallery. Calendars featuring Ken’s photos are for avail for $10, proceeds will help Beauty Night meet the growing needs of impoverished women & youth.

Truth & Beauty: Photographs by Ken Villeneuve is on display at Vancouver’s InterUrban Gallery until December 7th. Ken Villeneuve created this collection of photographs over the past five years. The exhibit focuses on Vancouver’s downtown eastside, and on Beauty Night in particular. Ken has also included portraits from Something to Eat, a Place to Sleep, and Someone Who Gives a Damn, his documentary about homelessness.

“Don’t believe all the negative things you read and hear about the DTES, there are pockets of optimism and cheerfulness, and Beauty Night is one of them. This show was inspired by Beauty Night and all of the lovely people that attend,” says Ken.

Ken has generously created Truth & Beauty desk calendars featuring his photos with proceeds going to Beauty Night ($10 at InterUrban Gallery, cash only).

Beauty Night Society is celebrating its 13th year and 36,000th makeover for impoverished women and youth. Funds raised through the sale of Truth & Beauty calendars will help Beauty Night increase the number of makeovers provided each week from 250 to 300. “Currently we have 10 organizations on a wait list who would like us to deliver services to their participants. We are hoping to raise the resources we need to be able to meet the growing need,” says Beauty Night founder Caroline MacGillivray.

InterUrban Gallery is located @ 1 East Hastings Street. Ken Villeneuve’s Truth & Beauty exhibit runs Wed to Sat (1pm-5pm) until December 7th, admission is free.

Team Beauty Night Visits Surrey, New West and Burnaby Monthly

On Feb 5th, we begin our monthly Surrey events. Thanks to a partnership with Maxxine Wright, we are able to start offering monthly programming for low income women in Surrey. “In the past 18 months, we have found out many of our participants in the programs we offer in Vancouver’s DTES reside in Burnaby, Surrey and New West. Starting February 2013, we will be offering 1 night of programming each month in each city (Surrey, New West and Burnaby). At our last volunteer meeting in Surrey, our Team Beauty Night members agreed that we would see if we can increase our programming to twice a month after 3 months, three times a month at nine months and 4 times a month within a year. This would be based on developing the resources - volunteer base, donations and community support within each community we offer our services in. Already we have a wait list of community partners who would like to see our programming at their facilities,” explained Beauty Night Founder, Caroline MacGillivray.

If you are interested in joining Team Beauty Night for our events in Surrey, New West or Burnaby, we have a volunteer orientation set up for Sunday, February 17th.

Perception of Beauty

Perception of Beauty
By Adriana Ortega

¨You can only perceive real beauty in a person as they get older¨ Anouk Aimee

I have volunteered for Beauty Night for 2 months; it’s been a life-changing experience. I have learned about patience, compassion, respect, empathy and so many other things more than I have in my whole life. Every Tuesday, I apply make up to our participants. Today, I had to apply make up to this beautiful women in her late 40´s or early 50´s. She asked me some tips about make up because she was looking for a job and wanted to know how she could look better and more presentable.

As I started talking to her, she tells me how hard has been to find a job for people her age, and even though she has all the energy to work, employers only want to hire young people. She tells me she is old and not pretty anymore. As I listen, I cant help thinking that sadly, most of the time this is true, but what it really hits me is to see how she actually believed she wasn’t beautiful anymore, and she was.

All the marketing and propaganda around us has made us believe that ¨beauty¨ is something that comes with ¨youth¨ and specific stereotypes; skinny, tall, perfect nose, perfect hair, etc., and there is nothing further from the truth. If you pay attention to all the ads, not only do they always use perfect photoshopped women, but always say things like ¨younger beautiful skin¨, ¨look 10 years younger and beautiful¨. The list is endless. As soon as you get older you automatically stop being beautiful. I see every day how those companies and products that claim to give us that ¨self confidence¨ are the ones that took it away from us in the first place.

All this makes me think about how we perceive beauty and how mistaken this perception is most of the time. Wouldn’t it be so much better if instead of saying things like ¨I want to look younger¨, we said ¨I want to age beautifully¨? or those ads instead of saying ¨Look younger and beautiful¨ said, ¨Look gorgeous at your age?¨ And that we started to appreciate beauty in all her forms and ages?

How would the world be if only we accepted and realized that each and every one of us are beautiful in our own and unique way? If only we didn´t let anybody else put us down and make us believe we are not beautiful and important? If only we respected other´s uniqueness, regardless of their age, origin and beliefs?
