Community Support for Beauty Night’s 12 Days of Xmas Stocking Campaign

Care Products collected by Delta Heat Fastpitch Players

Thank you to our wonderful community for supporting Beauty Night’s 12 Days of Xmas Stocking Campaign! Here are a few notable updates:

  • Kore Salon, one of our drop off locations, has generously organized a draw for those who donate at their salon. The prize? A $150 customizable gift basket (products and/or services - your choice!)
  • Eastside Fitness has been busy sewing 200 stockings for our cause. Team Beauty Night Volunteer, Joanna Redfern’s Create it Emp is sewing an additional 200. Team Beauty Night members Sharon Hong, Jenny Hong, Kim Krempien, and Gary Smith have been sewing away.
  • The young ladies of Delta Heat Fastpitch organized a donation drive and collected lots of care items (as seen in the photo above). Stocking stuffing drives have been blazing through the lower mainland. Huge thank you to Blair Lockhart, York House School, Envision Financial, TD Canada Trust, BC Hydro, and many more for collecting donations to fill 1500 stockings.
  • Capital Tax Services is kindly donating 1500 emery boards
  • For the second year in a row, Vital Health is participating in our 12 Days of Xmas campaign. Large donations of goodies to fill our stockings have been delivered there. Some of the goodies include 1500 shower gels from Lush Cosmetics, 500 journals from Hartley and Marks and Hair brushes and accessories from London Drugs.
  • Vital Health and Carrie Wheeler Entertainment Group are working together to lead a team of volunteers to fill 1500 stockings. Instead of a holiday party, CWEG clients give their time to fill 1500 stockings.

Our goal is to deliver 1500 stockings filled with care items to Vancouver women and youth in need. We are collecting items until Nov 29th. If you would like to contribute, our wish list and drop off info is listed here in our original post.

$10 000 For Our Cause!

Team Beauty Night Member, Lily Mignault with one of our beautiful ladies at Beauty Night

Huge thank you to team beauty night member, Lily Mignault for being one of the top ten recipients of Telus’ Give Wherewe Live Contest. She submitted a photo of her volunteering at Beauty Night! We are thrilled to be her charity of choice. Every $24 makes it possible to help one of our ladies. The $10 000 Lily won will make a huge impact in our quest to serve 250 participants each week. Check out the contest’s video here.

“I am so grateful to have inspired and to be able to give $10,000 to an amazing charity Beauty Night Society . This organization helps build self-esteem and empower mothers, children, street youth, former sex-workers and women living in poverty. Mental illness, sexual violence, hunger and homelessness are a reality of many women living in Vancouver’s downtown east side. This organization brings women together to laugh, become friends, and feel connected to their community. By building their community and empowering these women, they can start believing that change is possible. Thank you so very much TELUS for your generous donation ! I am truly blessed and honored to be able to pass it on to Beauty Night Society. #givewhereyoulive ” - Lily Mignault

Beauty Night Launches Monthly Programs in Burnaby

Team Beauty Night Members:
(back row) Courtney, Carol, Fiona (Front row) Mylen, Stephanie and Caroline at 1st monthly Beauty Night in Burnaby

February 28th we escaped from the rain and visited our friends at Elspeth House in Burnaby. Over tea and snacks, services such as hair cuts, foot care, skin care, nail care and relaxation massage were offered to our participants.

Our first monthly event in Burnaby started off slow. The participants came by to greet us. Yet it took a while to connect and build the level of comfort to have programming. By the end of the evening laughter, friendship and fun filled the room. The following day we received a beautiful email from one of our friends on staff:

Dear Caroline,

I wanted to give you and your wonderful volunteers a sincere THANK YOU from Elspeth House. The goodwill and positive energy that you brought to the women through your personal attention and kindness has facilitated a climate of kindness and respect that is evident today between the women. Thank you to you and your volunteers for modeling dignity, respect and compassion in action and passing this along to the women as a powerful tool that they can use in their interpersonal relationships.

I overheard some of the women telling you and your volunteers their personal stories and this is evidence that you were able to create a safe and trusting environment in a very short time that humanizes and validates women wherever they area in their personal history. Leadership has many definitions and leaders have many qualities, the best leaders are the ones that see what needs to be done, organize like minded people, roll up their sleeves and get the job done. These are the people that make a difference in peoples lives and you are one of those people.

The women have signed a thank you card (their idea) to you and your volunteers and I told them that I would send it off to you, could you send me your postal address?

Sincerely,

Marlene

Team Beauty Night Visits Surrey, New West and Burnaby Monthly

On Feb 5th, we begin our monthly Surrey events. Thanks to a partnership with Maxxine Wright, we are able to start offering monthly programming for low income women in Surrey. “In the past 18 months, we have found out many of our participants in the programs we offer in Vancouver’s DTES reside in Burnaby, Surrey and New West. Starting February 2013, we will be offering 1 night of programming each month in each city (Surrey, New West and Burnaby). At our last volunteer meeting in Surrey, our Team Beauty Night members agreed that we would see if we can increase our programming to twice a month after 3 months, three times a month at nine months and 4 times a month within a year. This would be based on developing the resources - volunteer base, donations and community support within each community we offer our services in. Already we have a wait list of community partners who would like to see our programming at their facilities,” explained Beauty Night Founder, Caroline MacGillivray.

If you are interested in joining Team Beauty Night for our events in Surrey, New West or Burnaby, we have a volunteer orientation set up for Sunday, February 17th.

Smell This Aromatherapy Visits Beauty Night

Every month our friends from Smell This visit our Beauty Night ladies. They set up a scent bar. For those who have never been to a scent bar, this is an opportunity to create your own “pure” fume. Smell This brings the essential oils and you are able to create your own scent.

Every month, they visit our Beauty Night ladies. One of my favourite sights is seeing the ladies naming their “pure” fumes. As they sit around the round tables and decide which scents they love the most, they share names. “My Own Creation”, “Heavenly”, and “Tyla” are some of the names of “pure” fumes they created.

While the Scent Bar is in session, our Team Beauty Night volunteers are offering services. Hair cuts, foot care, manicures, mini facials, brow shaping and relaxation massage are some of the services offered by our volunteers. The conversations, the laughter and friendships that blossom during our events are the threads that build the tapestry of our community.

If you would like to join Team Beauty Night, our next volunteer orientations are:

January 27 in Surrey

February 5th in Vancouver
