York House Students Support Beauty Night Society

We met our wonderful friends from York House School when Monica Regan grade 6 class were volunteering to decorate and fill xmas stockings. Caroline MacGillivray came to speak to the two classes about Beauty Night Society and the work we do. The girls wanted to help - and help they did. They created friendship bracelets and sold them. They raised $218 for our cause. On December, 18th they came to our 12 year anniversary holiday party to bring the cheque, share some delicious tiger bark with our ladies and paint nails. We are delighted that many of them will be attending our next volunteer orientation on January 8th, 2013 at 6pm at DTES Women’s Centre 302 Columbia to officially join Team Beauty Night.

Celebrate Dignity: 12 Years; 26, 000 makeovers Thanks to 500+ Volunteers

On December 15th, 2000 (12 years ago), the first Beauty Night was held at WISH Drop in Centre in Vancouver’s DTES. A local actress and writer, Caroline MacGillivray started volunteering at WISH in the summer of 2000. She was researching a role for an upcoming film. One night, a woman came in who had had a bad day. She did not want to eat, speak or assistance with housing, bad date sheet or shelter for the night - she wanted to “feel clean.” After having a shower, the woman picked up a curling iron that had been donated to the centre. She was unable to bring her arms up to curl her hair. Caroline offered to do this for her. With simple kindness, friendship was born. The woman left walking taller and seemed to have an extra bounce in her step. After repeated requests for makeovers from other women, Caroline proposed a “beauty night”.

The organization has grown from it’s first Beauty Night (14 volunteers and served 73 women) to offer programs 4 nights a week (serving 200 each week). Thanks to 500+ volunteers, Beauty Night has given over 26, 000 makeovers in 12 years. The three streams of programming focus on wellness, life skills development and makeovers. The joy, friendship and laughter connects the community together.

When MacGillivray asked the women how they would like to celebrate Beauty Night’s 12th anniversary, many said they would like to support the organization that has had a positive impact on their lives. They wanted to have a fashion show. When the Hive Vancouver contacted MacGillivray to support this cause, she was delighted. “The Hive Vancouver wanted to bring the community together by holding an event to support our cause. When the possibility of a fashion show was mentioned, I was thrilled. It seemed like a great fit.”

On Saturday December 15th, Beauty Night celebrates it’s 12 year anniversary at the Celebrate Dignity Gala at the Hive Vancouver. Hosted by Jessica Holmes Canadian motivational speaker and comedian (Royal Canadian Air Farce) this eco fashion show will feature 10 of our Beauty Night ladies. We are excited to have 2013 Miss World Canada Finalist Kristiana Banden will be one of our speakers. Sponsored by Hive Vancouver, Lonsdale Event Rentals, MCNG Marketing, Pizzazz Modeling (Dale), Coleseum Medi Spa, and PiDGin Restaurant.

Tickets are $99. Event includes entertainment, fashion show, comedy, desert, raffle, silent auction and much more. To purchase tickets, please visit here. * For Beauty Night Supporters, you can get 50% off with this promo code bnsbffs

Sewers Needed for 12 Days of Xmas Campaign

Fashion Designer, Nancy Perreault designs an Xmas Stocking. Community members and high school textile class students who want to volunteer, pick up the fabric and are given the stocking pattern.

The stockings need to be sewn and dropped off to Beauty Night before November 15th. At that stage, the stockings will be picked up by community groups and elementary school students who would like to decorate the stockings.

We (Team Beauty Night) go into the schools to engage students to have discussions about the cycle of poverty and how we can bring change and hope into the lives of people in the cycle of poverty. The stockings are decorated and dropped off by December 1.

Companies and individuals fill the stockings with self care and luxury products. There are several drop off locations in the Lower Mainland by December 1. By December 8th, stockings are filled. Volunteer Elves are able to pick up stockings and are on schedule for the next 12 days to drop off the stockings with Santa’s helpers.

By December 24th, we will have handed out 1500 Xmas stockings for women and youth living in poverty.

Here’s a video created by Bill Nevison capturing Team Beauty Night handing out the stockings during our annual Xmas party (included during our 12 days of Xmas Campaign) in 2008.

Beauty Night News: Week of May 28th

Photo: Beauty Night Volunteers Kathleen Nosek, Courtney
Emerslund, Hikaru Hirabayashi and Mira Thomas at
Rice Block last Thursday.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who made last Tuesday run smoothly. By 4:30pm we had 50+ women signed up for dinner. By the time we opened the doors, we had over 63 women in for dinner. We recruited one of our participants Corina to give us a hand. She told the ladies that we knew that everyone was hungry and that we did not want to turn anyone away. She let them know we were splitting the portions in half so we would be able to serve more women. She called out the first 10 women on the list to come up. As she went through the list of 50 women, Adrianna greeted new comers at the door and explained the situation. After Corina made sure the first 50 women had been fed, Adrianna gave her the new list which had an additional 13 women on it. It was a busy busy night. By the end of the night, we had well over 110 people come through the doors.

With cheque issue the following day, it was busy and at times stressful. I want to thank everyone for being such an incredible team. You bring so much joy into the fabric of our community - thank you!

Empowered Health (airs on Chek 6 at 7pm on June 7th) came in to do a story. Tonight, the Vancouver Sun will be by to do a profile piece about our cause. The story will go to print on June 7th in conjunction with the Empowered Health piece.

Thursday night at Rice Block was the exact opposite of Tuesday evening. Due to staff changes, they did not know we were coming. It was a quiet evening but the ladies who did come had a fantastic time. The follow up emails we’ve had from their management team show they are in agreement that we should continue to offer our programming on the Thursday after cheque issue at their location. To quote one of the women: “If you weren’t here, I would be lying around my room trying not to go to the alley. Thank you for being here.”
