Less Than Two Tickets to the Movies

On April 1st, our new Fiscal year began. Our goals this year are to serve 250 participants each week. By offering additional leadership training to our volunteer base of 500 volunteers, increasing our community partnerships and focusing on strengthening the ones we currently have, we aim to better serve our participants. Last year we served 10, 000 participants.

For $24, you can make a positive impact in a woman’s life. Less than two tickets to the movies.

2010 Stocking Drive

Dear friends,

Beauty Night Society is an award-winning registered charity that builds hope, trust and self-esteem in vulnerable women through life makeovers that include wellness, fitness, literacy, personal and leadership development. We would like to build a mutually beneficial partnership with your company to celebrate the beauty of all women.

On Christmas Eve 2009, thirty volunteers handed out 500 Christmas stockings to women living in poverty residing in shelters, health care facilities, transition homes in Vancouver, Toronto, and Prince George.

Hundreds of volunteers throughout the community make this event possible. Vancouver fashion designer Nancy Perreault designed the stocking. With 40 metres of donated fabric, high school textiles classes, fashion design students and Girl Guides sewed 500 Christmas stockings. Beauty Night Society volunteers filled them with donated hair, skin, dental and body care products.

This year we will more than double the number of recipients of Christmas stockings. On Christmas Eve 2010, 1,200 stockings created and decorated by children and youth will be handed out by Ms. Claus to women in shelters and transition homes.

You can be a part of this worthwhile program by donating new dental, nail, hair, skin and body care products to fill the 1200 stockings. Please refer to our website for information on this.

If you have any questions or would like additional information, I can be contacted at any time at [email protected] or 778-885-4526. More information on Beauty Night’s history and programs can be found at www.beautynight.org.

Old/Gently Used Cosmetics

Many people offer to donate their old or gently used cosmetics. Health Safety Canada included a segment why cosmetics should not be resold at a garage sale:

Cosmetics - Used, old, or damaged cosmetics should never be sold. These products may contain harmful bacteria that could cause skin rashes or lead to infections. Additionally, second-hand cosmetics may be missing required labelling information, such as ingredients, warnings, and directions for safe use. A cosmetic is defined as a beauty preparation (make-up, perfume, skin cream, nail polish) or grooming aid (toothpaste, soap, shampoo, shaving cream, deodorant) used for cleansing, improving or altering the complexion, skin, hair or teeth.

Many of our makeover participants have HIV/AIDS and/or Hep C. Although we are grateful for community support, we can not accept donations of old or gently used cosmetics.

Social Media for Not for Profits

I logged onto my twitter account @beautynight.

This is what I saw on my twitter feed:

monicahamburg@beautynight Just created some cool word clouds from tags on your blog (using wordle) http://twurl.nl/u43m3e & http://twurl.nl/6vudjc

Monica nominated me for the Canadian Living “MetoWe” Award. If you haven’t voted yet, please do. If I win, they will donate $5000 to Beauty Night Society.

Using Facebook, she contacted our mutual friends and encouraged them to vote. She has launched a twitter campaign to encourage people to vote for this award. If you are on Twitter and would like to spread the word, that would be fantastic. Here is something you can tweet:

Please Vote & RT - Help @beautynight win the “MetoWe” Award! (“In The Community” Category) http://twurl.nl/zwepmy.

Monica will be presenting tips on how not for profits can benefit from social media. The conference will be run through www.canadahelps.org. If you wish to make an online donation to a charity (including Beauty Night, our donate now button is just at the left hand corner of the page, please do so.)

Beauty Night Turns 8

Beauty Night Turns 8!
Date: Monday, December 15th, 6 -9pm
Location: Life Skills Centre at 412 East Cordova.

“She’s growing up,” says Beauty Night Founder, Caroline MacGillivray.
On December 15th Beauty Night celebrates its 8th birthday. “It is
amazing how far we have come,” says MacGillivray.

In 8 years, the award-winning non-profit program has provided 10,000
makeovers to marginalized women and youth in Vancouver, Victoria, and
Toronto. Beauty Night’s Monday makeover night on December 15th will
include some North Pole notables-Mrs. Claus and her elves handing out
Christmas stockings designed by Nancy Black. “This is the sixth year of
our annual stocking drive,” says MacGillivray. “Every year we make 500
stockings and hand most of them out on Xmas eve as well as during the
events leading up to it.”

Typically, Beauty Night’s Monday makeover night at the Life Skills
Centre unites an impressive roster of Lower Mainland volunteers.
Hairdressers, makeup artists, estheticians, massage therapists, plus
many more volunteers join forces to offer services for the women. On
December 15th, the “tea” ladies from Teldon Publishing will also be on
hand offering hot tea and healthy snacks to Beauty Night clients. Lush
Cosmetics will be offering mini facials.

The community has kicked in to help. Spearheaded by Beauty Night’s
Stocking Coordinator, Blair Lockhart and Product Coordinator, Revel
Kunz, many more volunteers throughout the community have helped make
this event a reality. Students at York House School, the Rangers (youth
girls group), Sharon Hong and many more helped sew the stockings.
Canada Trust, Carrie Wheeler Talent Management, and Blanche McDonald
have been collecting donations of skin care, makeup, nail, dental, body,
and hair care products to fill the stockings with. Other donations
include gloves and toques.

Beauty Night is excited to include Knit Fit as part of the festivities.
Founded five years ago by Laura Mah at the tender age of 11, Knit Fit
has been teaching youth to knit and Beauty Night Clients reap the
benefit. On December 15th, 16 year old Mah and her cohorts will be
handing out hand knit scarves to the Beauty Night Clients.
Beauty Night Birthday party will also be making spirits bright for both
volunteers and their makeover subjects with Christmas movies and other
Xmas goodies.

For more information about donating product, snacks or money, please
contact Caroline MacGillivray at 778-885-4526. Media welcome. Beauty
Night’s 6th annual stocking drive will be collecting new hair, nail,
skincare, dental care, gloves and socks before December 14th.
