Healthy is Beautiful

The flu season is upon us, and everyone everywhere is being more aware of their health and staying healthy.apple hearts
Beauty Night realizes that healthy eating is not about strict nutrition philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible.  Which is one reason we are starting a course for moms and tots teaching healthy recipes that they can prepare with the  tools that they have (often only hot plates) and the food that they have avaliable to them.  We would love to hear your suggestion of recipes!

Eating poorly conributes to stress and many other side effects, such as:

  • Blood Sugar Imbalances: When we don’t eat enough food, or don’t eat healthy enough food (too little protein and healthy carbohydrates, too much sugar, etc.) we can experience blood sugar fluctuations. These fluctuations can lead to mood swings, fatigue, poor concentration and other negative consequences in the short term, and greater health problems like hyperglycemia in the long run.
  • Caffeine Side Effects: Too much caffeine can lead to poor concentration and decreasef effectiveness, sleep disturbances, and increased levels of cortisol in the blood.
  • Poor Health Outcomes: Poor nutrition can also lead to lowered immunity so you’re more susceptible to illnesses, both minor and major. As you can imagine, this can lead to other problems, including increased stress levels.

We feel that helping our clients make great food choices, they will start to feel amazing and make great life choices as well.

If you can help, please email info@beautynight.org, leave a comment or donate!

25 Years from Now

A few weeks ago the African Children’s Choir celebrated their 25 year anniversary. People around the world gathered together at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver to join in the festivities. Thanks to my friend, David Hurford, I was able to attend the gala. Sir Bob Geldoff was honoured for his avocacy work. The fundraiser profiled how the organization grew from a missions trip to Africa. There Ray Barnett, Founder & President of Music for Life heard a child sing. In a land where thousands of children were starving and in need of food and support, they found joy. Instead of the pictures of poverty and desolation that appeared on most news stations around the globe, the African Children’s Choir founders wanted to show the world how wonderful the children were. Through the tours, the choir has been able to give dignity and respect to the children and raise valuable dollars to build schools and so many wonderful programs.

Many of the choir members alumni were present. Engineers, doctors, fashion designers, and those working with the communities they reside in were there.  It was inspiring and uplifting to me to see how much the African Children’s Choir has achieved in 25 years. I watched as the live auction took place. Vicki Gabereau and Barry Scott, an auctioneer from Maynards kept driving the prices of the live auction pieces up. I watched in fascination wishing that I had funds to bid on some of the pieces. Running a charity, one understands how necessary having money to achieve your mission can be. To quote Peter Brinckerhoff: “No money, no mission.”

Caroline @ the African Childrens Choir gala dinner on Sept. 29 (Hotel Vancouver)

Beauty Night National Executive Director & Founder, Caroline MacGillivray with Serena and Jeffrey Lowe and two of the members of the choir at the African Children's Choir 25th Anniversary Gala Celebration on Sept. 29 (Fairmont Hotel Vancouver)

I started to reflect about how much Beauty Night Society has done on such a nominal budget. Through community support we have run our programs for almost 9 years. Thanks to our volunteers, contributors and our participants, we have achieved many things. I could not help but wonder what would happen if we did have sustainable funding. Our program success are a huge tribute to human spirit, belief that we can make a difference in this world by following our mission and persistence.  I started to wonder how we get from where we are today to where I would like to be on our 25th anniversary.

Our mission is to provide marginalized people tools to make positive lifestyle changes to heal themselves and our communities. Our goal is to be able to serve as many people as we can in as many communities around the globe as possible. As I watched  pieces from the Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince and Audrey Hepburn’s glove & Tiffany watch be auctioned off, I couldnt’ help but wonder how do we get from where we are now to where we would like to be in two years.

“Caroline MacGillivray from Beauty Night Society,” a voice called out. I looked up to see Vicki Gabereau holding my business card. With a jolt, I pulled myself out of my chair and headed towards the stage. At the top of the evening, we were able to enter our names in a draw to win Bryan Adams tickets.  From the distance, I could see my pink business card in Vicki Gabereau’s hand.

When I climbed up the stairs to the stage, Vicki asked me if we should tell everyone about Beauty Night Society. For a moment, I hesitated as it would be great to tell people about what we do. I shook my head. It wasn’t the right time and place. It was time to raise money so the African Children’s Choir could continue to heal more children. I told Vicki I wanted to auction the tickets off. She turned to the mike and announced we were auctioning off the tickets. People became engaged and began to bid. The tickets sold for $4000.

With a bounce in my step, I walked down the stairs back to my seat. The people at my table, some who I now count as friends hugged me and told me it was “such a great thing to do.” I was surprised as to me – it was the only thing to do. When something feels right and I listen to it, I feel satisfied. As I continue to walk towards the future, I thought of all the organizations that are making a difference in this world. I want Beauty Night Society to continue to walk beside them. As we continue down this path, I can only hope that we will be able to work with like minded organizations to help restore dignity and respect to everyone in this world.

* And I did get rewarded for my efforts. I was already flushed from raising an additional $4000. Paul Rodger’s wife told me it was a wonderful thing that I did. She teased me and said, “You don’t really like Bryan Adams do you?” I looked at her in surprise and told her I love Bryan Adams. I grew up listening to him. She pressed the tickets in my hands and told me to enjoy the concert. When I protested, she told me they could always get tickets from Bryan. I was told to have a good time. And that I did. The concert was fantastic!

Xmas Stocking Drive

At Beauty Night, we have been thinking about Christmas since July! During the warm summer months, many a afternoon was spent in brain storm sessions with Laura Mah, Blair Lockhart, Nancy Black, Revel Kunz, Christie Gray and Tiffany Telford. The questions we kept asking were:

We have been doing the annual Xmas stocking drive for 8 years, what is working well?

What do we want to change?

How can we get more community members involved?

How do we get the message out?

How do we know if we meet the needs of the community?

What worked well was the dynamic community response to the Xmas Drive.  Seniors, industry professionals, parents, children, youth and tweens wanted to contribute their time, energy, money and resources. Through word of mouth and positive media coverage this event has more volunteers wanting to get involved.

To increase word of mouth, Christie and I spent several afternoons with Knit Fit volunteers. Our training sessions included:

  • Social media training. How to use facebook, twitter and word press to share their stories of volunteering
  • Christie Gray created accounts for the volunteers who were interested in blogging. They have been contributing their stories on this blog about the Knit Fit and Stocking Drive.
  • Board member, Bill Nevison created a video of last year’s Xmas Stocking Drive celebration and posted it on You Tube. We encouraged the volunteers to use the video to show people what we do. People get 90% of their information from what they see and 10% from what they hear. Sometimes pictures work well – especially seeing the distribution of the stockings and scarves.
  • Public Speaking. I have heard that some people fear having to speak in front of people more than death. The volunteers prepared a speech about Knit Fit and Stocking Drive. Like monologues, we worked through the speeches. We worked on the key messaging, breath work, completing the thought and the writing. We work-shopped the speeches to make sure each speech felt like it sounded like the person who was delivering the speech.
  • Policy & Procedures. Together we discussed leadership techniques and guidelines for working with children and peers. We discussed how to create a safe and enjoyable space for volunteers to feel empowered and become actively engaged in the projects we are creating. Working together, we came up with some fantastic ideas and put them into motion.

What we are doing is working. Last weekend when Beauty Night Society volunteer, Denise Von Gorkum and I took several Beauty Night participants to the Models of Inspiration Filmathon, we ran into one of the parents of our Knit Fit volunteers. She thanked me for being a good role model for her daughters and their friends. She asked if we needed more volunteers for our Kids Club program. She offered to drive the girls who wished to volunteer to and from our location.

I am thrilled that people want to get more involved with the programming. This week we have been having meetings with volunteers and community members who want to offer other programs for our participants. Digital story telling, inner beauty boot camp, blogging, yoga classes and nutrition classes are some of the program options we are considering. While we continue to create opportunities for our participants, we keep the line of communication open with our participants and community partners. We want to make sure what we are offering is what the women want and that starts with asking for feed back.

Thanks to DJ Joe, our participant facilitator we have been able to ask for feed back from our participants.  The general consensus is positive. Thanks to DJ’s constant queries, we are making some adjustments in our times and days for programming to make sure we are giving the women what they want.

The participants love the concept of joy and celebration. We have managed to include that in our regular programming. This past week’s programming included Beautilicious Halloween Celebration, Mom & Tot pumpkin carving sessions and pumpkin fitness classes. Through innovation and constant feedback, we continue to evolve our programming as we work together with our contributors, volunteers and participants.

As for our Xmas Activities, the women love the stockings and the Knit Fit scarves.  What they would like to see is a way they can help with the planning. We have started inviting participants to our stocking cutting sessions. Although the participants have not attended these sessions, they seem to enjoy being asked.

Volunteers from York House School, Churchill Secondary, Kwatlan College – Fashion Design Program, Van Tech Secondary, Little Flower Academy, and individual sewers have stitched up stockings. Stocking Coordinator, Blair Lockhart has been collecting the sewn stockings and dropping them off to groups of children to decorate them. Sparks (5-7 year olds – before Brownies), Brownies and Girl Guides are getting together to decorate and in some cases fill the stockings.

Last year Revel Kunz opened up her home to the Rangers (one of groups of children who sewed and decorated stockings). The Rangers spent one Monday evening filling 130 stockings! By encouraging children and youth to get involved, I believe it helps them understand that we can impact someone’s life. When we work together, we can change the world.

I hope you enjoy the Halloween festivities. Stay tuned for our Xmas Wish List for our 8th Annual Xmas Stocking Drive.

We’ve come a long way!

It’s hard to believe that Beauty Night Society is almost 9! A lot has changed as we have grown, and a lot more will change as we continue to grow.
The Vancouver Sun wrote this story about our 8 year anniversary.
Since then, our programming has continued to expand, with thanks to our generous volunteers and supporters. We really couldn’t do this without you!
We’re at the start of our busiest season. If you’re interested in volunteering, please email info@beautynight.org to see about opportunities. If you would like to donate yarn or knitting needles for Knit Fit, that would also be wonderful.
We are trying to raise funds to buy products to put into our Christmas Stockings as well.  Having funds allows us to buy in bulk, which is beneficial to the women. We love product as well, but it does have to be unused and unopened to ensure our clients feel dignified.  Just think, would you like to receive a half used bottle of shampoo in your stocking?
We are also gearing up a Mom and Tot nutrition program, where we will be teaching Moms how to cook simple, healthy recipes under the constraint of it having to be prepared on a hotplate since that is the tools they have available. If you would like to donate crockpots or other kitchen supplies (such as tupperware), we would love that too!

I’m excited about what the future holds for Beauty Night, and I can’t thank you enough for making all of this possible.
